What's in store for today:
- From desperation to success
- Scaling with purpose: The 3HAG explained
Hey {{There}},
This week on The Freedom Experience®, I had the privilege of speaking with Shannon Byrne Susko, someone I deeply admire.
Today, Shannon is a celebrated author, in-demand speaker, and one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women.
But it wasn’t always that way...
We founded our companies in the late nineties, before systems like EOS®, Scaling Up, or Metronomics existed.
Back then, we relied on the few business books available to guide our growth.
Like many entrepreneurs, we faced immense pressure from stakeholders to grow, which often led to the overwhelming feeling of being what Shannon terms a Desperate CEO.
A feeling many founders, owners, and CEOs grapple with daily.
Shannon’s journey from navigating chaos to scaling and exiting multiple companies is close to my heart as it parallels my own entrepreneurial journey–the feeling of desperation and how to grow up a business, not just its revenue.
What Shannon created with Metronomics is more than just another business operating system. It’s a comprehensive growth framework integrating key concepts from business thought leaders, aligning people, strategy, and execution to drive sustainable success.
Her 3HAG framework, in particular, empowers leaders to set and achieve meaningful long-term goals, transforming businesses from reactive to proactive.
If you’re feeling desperate—like you’re spinning your wheels and not making progress—this episode is for you.
Shannon's insights offer practical tools to help you break free, regain control, and build a business that aligns with your vision and purpose.
Enjoy!

1. From desperation to success
At the beginning of Shannon's entrepreneurial career, she describes herself as feeling like a "Desperate CEO" struggling to manage rapid growth without the right systems in place.
Despite growing top-line revenue, her business lacked the foundational structures needed to sustain long-term success.
This desperation led her to a critical turning point: she needed a system to pull everything together.
Metronomics was born from her experiences in her first company, Paradata, where she developed and refined the system.
After exiting Paradata, Shannon tested and proved Metronomics in her second business, Sub Servo, successfully scaling and exiting that business in just three years!
I could have talked to Shannon for hours—her insights are like a well of entrepreneurial wisdom.
Here are a few takeaways that can transform your business...
-
The Importance of Strategic Clarity and Focus
Shannon stressed that businesses often flounder because they lack a clear path to their long-term goals. This is where her 3HAG framework becomes so valuable. Business leaders can bridge the gap between their short-term priorities and long-term vision by focusing on a three-year highly achievable goal. It makes big-picture objectives tangible and brings them within reach. -
Coaching and Self-Awareness
Coaching was a game-changer for Shannon. As a young CEO, she sought guidance from mentors and coaches who helped her see her blind spots. Shannon emphasizes that personal growth is inseparable from business growth—being coachable and self-aware enables leaders to grow alongside their businesses. Self-awareness also allows leaders to course-correct and make the right decisions at critical moments. -
The Power of Team Cohesion
Building a cohesive leadership team is critical for driving your business growth. A key to this is developing leaders into coaches who, in turn, elevate their teams to high-performing units aligned with the company's vision. Shannon's coach cascade system connects all leaders through a unified plan, creating exponential momentum. You can unlock your growth goals by growing leaders into coaches and aligning their teams. -
The Cash System
Shannon’s experience revealed that a well-defined cash system is vital for growth. Driving revenue growth alone is not enough—companies must understand how to generate consistent cash flow. Her cash system, integrated into the Metronomics framework, connects strategy to daily operations, ensuring the company's financial health. This system brings visibility to the key financial drivers and helps leaders make informed, strategic decisions. -
Life-Altering Exits and Personal Growth
Shannon’s multiple exits transformed her businesses and her life. By creating systems that allowed her to step out of the day-to-day operations, she could focus on what mattered most—both personally and professionally. Her story is a reminder that having the right systems in place can free you to pursue bigger goals while ensuring your business continues to thrive.
Shannon’s journey from a desperate CEO to achieving life-changing exits illustrates the power of the Metronomics Business Growth System.

2. Scaling with purpose: the 3HAG explained
In this video, I break down the concept of the 3HAG (Three-Year Highly Achievable Goal) and why it’s a game-changing framework for business owners who feel stuck in the cycle of short-term thinking.
Whether you’re spinning your wheels with quarterly goals or struggling to scale with purpose, this video will show you how to align your short-term actions with long-term strategic growth.
Using real-world examples, I explain how the 3HAG bridges the gap between where you are now and your ultimate vision for success.

One quote to start the week strong
“You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.”
― CS Lewis
If you've been leading your company for a while and hit a plateau, you might feel like it’s too late to reconnect with your purpose—or even to discover a new one.
But that’s far from the truth.
Purpose is the driving force behind both personal and business growth. It’s never too late to reignite that spark.
Doing so can be the key to breaking through your current plateau and fueling your future success.
Have a great week!
