What's in store for today:
- Is your business too dependent on you?
- Tired of wasted strategy sessions?
- Why purpose is the key to unlocking growth
Hey {{first_name}},
Does running your business ever feel like riding a tiger?
It’s exhilarating and terrifying all at once. There’s no time to pause or plan because the tiger is always moving, its sheer momentum dictating your direction.
You’re holding on with white-knuckled intensity, fully aware that letting go could mean disaster.
Sounds crazy, right?
Not so for Carl Saunders.
When Carl asked his business partner what they needed to focus on—marketing materials, clarity, sharing their mission, and all those strategic elements—here’s how he responded:
"Business is really simple. All you’ve got to do is understand three words: ride the tiger. That’s what it is. I go out, I talk to customers, I find out what they need, I sell them what they ask for, and we ride the tiger."
In this week’s episode of The Freedom Experience, Carl shares his remarkable journey from riding the tiger to a more purposeful business.
He turned a reactive, hustle-fueled startup into a global leader by aligning his team with purpose, adopting systems, and stepping into true leadership.

Carl’s story speaks to any business owner stuck in a growth rut or overwhelmed by daily demands. This isn’t just about growing your business—it’s about building one that works without you so you can take back your time and focus on what really matters.

1. Is your business too dependent on you?
Be honest—how much of your business depends on you? Are you the first call when a client has a problem? The one who reviews every major decision? The keeper of all the key relationships?
I’ve been there.
When I was running my software company, I thought being at the center of everything was the sign of a good leader. Every decision crossed my desk. Clients bypassed my team and came straight to me. It felt like I was indispensable—but in reality, I was stuck.
Carl Saunders put it perfectly:
“At the beginning, my partner and I were making 95% of the decisions. By the time we hit $10 million, I was making less than 5%.”
That shift—moving from essential to optional—is what allowed his business to grow.
When your business depends too heavily on you, it’s not just exhausting—it’s risky.
Buyers see it as a red flag, and it can impact the value of your business. You might get less money upfront or be locked into “golden handcuffs,” stuck working in your business for years after selling.
Does this sound familiar?
- Clients insist on working with you, even though you have a capable team.
- Your team waits for your input before making decisions, big or small.
- Important relationships—like suppliers or key partners—rest solely on you.
The good news is you can fix this.
Here’s how to get started:
- Empower Your Team – Carl’s shift from 95% to 5% of decisions wasn’t about letting go of control—it was about building a stronger, more valuable company. By trusting his leaders, he created a business that could thrive without him.
- Document Your Knowledge – Write down the why behind your decisions. This isn’t just about creating a manual—it’s about teaching your team to think like you.
- Shift Relationships – Bring your team into key client or partner meetings and gradually step back. Clients will respect a professional, well-communicated handoff.
- Test the System – Take a step back, even for a few days, and see what happens. Use any hiccups as feedback to strengthen your processes.
Building a business that doesn’t rely on you doesn’t mean giving up control—it means gaining freedom.
Imagine stepping away for a month and returning to find everything running smoothly.
That’s not just good for you; it’s great for your business.
2. Tired of wasted strategy sessions?
Do strategy meetings feel like a waste of time?
You set big goals and get excited about what’s possible, but then... nothing changes. It can be frustrating and disheartening, and can leave you wondering if the whole process is even worth it.
The truth is, you’re not alone:
🤯 90% of organizations fail to execute their strategies successfully (Harvard Business School).
📉 Highly aligned organizations achieve 58% faster revenue growth and are 72% more profitable (Lucidchart).
🛑 Only 9% of small businesses surpass $1 million in annual revenue (Business Know-How).
Don’t let another year slip by without real progress.
A solid plan is just the starting point. The real transformation happens when you execute with clarity, consistency, and alignment. It’s the difference between spinning your wheels and building unstoppable momentum.
If you’re serious about making 2025 your year of growth, here are the 5 pillars you need:
- Strategy – a clear and concise strategy to achieve your goals
- Execution – aligned execution connecting daily actions to your long-term goals
- Accountability – systems that foster consistency and drive behavior
- Leadership - a leadership team that’s cohesive and aligned
- Score – visible metrics updated daily
When these pillars are in place, you’re no longer spinning your wheels in endless strategy meetings. You’re creating a rhythm of action that propels your business forward.
If you want to learn more or implement these pillars, join us in Dublin for the Foundation for Growth Workshop with a keynote by Shannon Byrne Susko, founder of Metronomics and a globally recognized business growth expert.
This in-person event will help you:
- Build a clear and actionable strategy,
- Align your team around your goals, and
- Create the systems needed to execute consistently and confidently.

3. Why purpose is key to unlocking growth
Many business owners I’ve interviewed admit that they initially dismissed the idea of purpose as fluffy or irrelevant to the real challenges of running a business.
I see this same resistance in kick-off sessions.
Business owners arrive with a laundry list of problems—process bottlenecks, growth plateaus, people challenges—but they don’t expect to tackle “soft” topics like purpose and core values.
Yet, time and again, I’ve seen both become the cornerstone of their success.
For instance, when Carl and his team at VORUM embraced their purpose—to improve the quality of care for prosthetic and orthotic patients globally—it transformed their business.
They set a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) to fit a patient with a custom device every second.
At the time, they were fitting one every 120 seconds.
By the time they sold the company, they had achieved a fitting every 62 seconds—a remarkable leap that inspired their team and proved the power of purpose in action.
Purpose isn’t fluffy—it’s fuel. It aligns teams, energizes them toward a shared vision, and creates momentum that drives real results.
When your purpose is clear, it becomes your strategic advantage, guiding decisions, attracting top talent, and making your company unstoppable.
One quote to start the week strong
"Our purpose wasn’t about revenue—it was about how often we could improve patients' lives globally. That’s what motivated us."- Carl Saunders
Carl captures the essence of purpose-driven leadership in this quote.
By focusing on the impact they could make—improving patients' lives globally—rather than just chasing revenue, Carl and his team found a deeper motivation that united and energized them.
Take a moment to reflect...
Is your business driven by a deeper purpose, or are you simply chasing numbers?
Have a great week!
